The word "perennial" comes from the Latin term for perpetual.

Most perennials go somewhat dormant looking over the winter months and spring back to life again in the spring. Some perennials remain green or leave an interesting texture and point of interest in the garden throughout the winter. Some perennials do start out slowly but just continue to amaze in the years to come. In fact an old English adage about perennials is "First year sleeps, second year creeps, and third year leaps". Each year watching those one-year-older perennials bloom is well worth the wait.
