Mowing Your Lawn

Mowing your lawn properly can help turn an average lawn to a great one. When mowing your lawn don't be tempted to cut it too short especially in the hot summer weather.

Always avoid scalping and never cut off more than 1/3 of the length of the grass in a single mowing. If you get behind in your mowing, cut it at a higher length and then lower your blade and mow again a few days later.

Keep lawnmower blades sharp to avoid tearing the grass. Ragged edges of torn grass will often turn brown and give your lawn a dried out look. Usually once a week will suffice for regular lawn mowing, however in heavy growth periods such as spring it maybe necessary to mow more frequently to avoid cutting more than 1/3 total growth.

Mow in different directions each time you mow to avoid grass "leaning" and try to avoid sharp turns with the mower. Use a header strip or turn the mower on a driveway or sidewalk. It is advisable never to mow wet lawn as this can lead to uneven cuts and promote fungal growth in your lawn.
