Gardening with Ornamental Grasses
Ornamental grasses are wonderful additions to any landscape. They provide texture, foliage colour and movement in the garden as they sway in the wind. They can be massed for dramatic effect, planted to screen a view or used as a stunning focal point. Ornamental grasses are fabulous in mixed plantings when paired with shrubs or as a backdrop for smaller perennials. They also provide wonderful winter interest with their showy plumes and graceful habit adding punctuation to the winter landscape.
In the spring, tall grasses can be pruned back to the ground before new growth begins. Bear in mind that many of the taller ornamental grasses are also late to come up in the spring, so be patient with them! Many of the short grasses and sedges are evergreen, so wait to see what they look like in the spring before you start pruning. If it still looks pretty good, simply tidy up any dead leaves. The lists below are designed to help demystify the world of grasses and serve as a guide you to help you choose the perfect one for your garden!
